Philip. G. Altbach (Chair)

  

Philip G. Altbach is the J. Donald Monan, S.J., professor of Higher Education and director of the Center for International Higher Education at the Lynch School of Education, Boston College. He has been a senior associate of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and served as editor of The Review of Higher Education, Comparative Education Review and Educational Policy. He is the author of Comparative Higher Education, Student Politics in America and other books. He co-edited the International Handbook of Higher Education. Dr. Altbach holds BA, MA and PhD degrees from the University of Chicago. He has taught at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he directed the Comparative Education Center and chaired the Department of Educational Organization, Administration and Policy. He was a postdoctoral fellow and lecturer on Education at Harvard University. He is a guest professor at the Institute of Higher Education at Peking University in China. He has been a visiting professor at Stanford University, the Institut de Sciences Politiques in Paris, and the University of Mumbai in India, and a Fulbright Scholar in India, Malaysia and Singapore. He has received awards from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and the German Academic Exchange Service-(DAAD). He has been an Onwell Fellow at the University of Hong Kong, and a senior scholar of the Taiwan government. He is listed in Who's Who in America and other major biographical volumes. He was the 2004-2006 Distinguished Scholar Leader of the Fulbright New Century Scholars programme.

Jamil Salmi

  

Jamil Salmi, a Moroccan education economist, is the coordinator of the World Bank's network of tertiary education professionals. Mr. Salmi is the principal author of the Bank's new Tertiary Education Strategy entitled "Constructing Knowledge Societies: New Challenges for Tertiary Education." In the past thirteen years, he has provided policy and technical advice on tertiary education reform to the governments of over 35 countries around the world. Mr. Salmi has also guided the strategic planning efforts of several public and private universities in Colombia, Kenya, Mexico and Peru. Before moving to the Human Development Vice-Presidency in July 2001, Mr. Salmi worked for 7 years in the Bank's Latin America and Caribbean region (as Education Sector Manager among others); in the Education and Social Policy Department of the World Bank (1990-1993) and also prepared the World Bank's first Policy Paper on Higher Education (1994). Prior to joining the World Bank, Mr. Salmi was a professor of education economics at the National Institute of Education Planning in Rabar, Morocco. He also worked as a consultant to various ministries, national professional associations, and international organizations. Mr. Salmi is a graduate of the French Grande Ecole ESSEC. He also holds a Master's degree in Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh (USA) and a PhD in Development Studies from the University of Sussex (UK). He is the author of five books and numerous articles on education and development issues.

Marijk van der Wende

  

Marijk van der Wende is Professor of Higher Education at Utrecht University’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance. Her research focuses on the impact of globalization and internationalization on higher education. She has published widely on the impact of these processes on higher education systems, institutions, curricula, and teaching and learning arrangements.She is also an affiliate faculty and research associate at the Center for Studies in Higher Education (CSHE) at the University of California Berkeley and member of the Academia Europaea (the Academy of Europe, section behavioral sciences).She held full professorial positions at VU University Amsterdam (2006-2015), the University of Twente (2001-2016), and was a visiting scholar at Harvard University (Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Graduate School of Education), Boston College (Centre for International Higher Education), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (Center for World-Class Universities and Graduate School of Education), and the University of California Berkeley (Center for Studies in Higher Education).She is currently a member of: the Supervisory Board of the Open University of the Netherlands, the Board of the Rathenau Institute for Science and Technology in Society, the International Advisory Board of the Centre for the Study of World Class Universities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Graduate Campus Advisory Board of the University of Zurich, and the Board of the Amsterdam University College Scholarship Fund (ASF Foundation). Previously, she was Dean of Graduate Studies at Utrecht University (2015-2017) and Founding Dean of Amsterdam University College (2007-2015). She served as the President of the programme on Institutional Management in Higher Education (IMHE) of the OECD (2005-2011), as a member of the Higher Education Authority Ireland (2011-2015), the Scientific Board of the Dutch Military Academy (2007-2013), and worked at NUFFIC (the Netherlands Organisation for International Cooperation in Higher Education) (1992-1998), and the Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) in Brussels (1994-1998). She has been a chair and member of numerous national and international advisory committees and editorial boards.Marijk holds BA degrees in teaching and pedagogy, and MA and PhD degrees in educational sciences, from the University of Amsterdam and the University of Utrecht respectively.
